When you go on your Discovery Cruise you are most welcome to bring along any family and friends that you’d like – may as well make a vacation of it, too! However, please remember that only you will be able to meet with the theatre staff. But, sometimes you need to, or want to, go on your Discovery Cruise on your own. You can if you are over 21. Here’s some things to know about if you are traveling solo… The biggest thing to look out for is that most cruise lines do not have cabins for solos, and they charge what is known as a “solo supplement”. This is essentially twice (or almost twice) the cruise fare of one person. This is because there would be only one person occupying a cabin that they could otherwise sell to two people, and also that one person won’t spend as much on board as two people would.
However, the good news is that there is one cruise line that realizes that solo traveling is ‘a thing’ and caters to solo cruisers. Not to make this blog into an advert, but that cruise line is Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL). Others are starting to follow suit, but solo cabins on other cruise lines are currently few and far between. NCL has a section of the ship reserved for solo travelers, called the Studios. You have to have your key card to enter this area of solo cabins. There is also a lounge just for these solo folks in the Studios, and the cruise line even arranges meet-ups and dinners! Now, all of these cabins are interior cabins (although NCL is starting to offer some solo balconies, so check), but they are very nice. I stayed in one on the Norwegian Bliss – that’s a photo of my cabin above. Other cruise lines that may have solo cabins include P&O, MSC (they sometimes have ‘no solo supplement’ sales), Holland America, Royal Caribbean, and Virgin Voyages. The newer the ship, the more likely it is to have solo cabins. Be sure to check with your travel agent if you are looking for a solo cruise. I could go on and on about solo traveling, but suffice it to say, don’t let the fact that you’d be a solo traveler stop you from your Discovery Cruise!
