Ahoy there! As of my last post I said I was going to be bringing you information from Utopia of the Seas. Well… I didn’t go. And here’s why… First, after having been told by one events manager on board that I would be able to interview theatre crew I was then told by another (more senior?) events manager on board that Royal Caribbean does not allow ‘unaccredited media’ to interview employees. I explained that, number one, I blog about my interviews and therefore be providing cruise lines with prospective employees. And, number two, I also book Discovery Cruises for prospective employees – people like yourselves who are interested in researching more about what it’s like to live and work in theatres on cruise ships – and therefore provide the cruise line with customers. But they would not budge. So, unfortunately, I must announce that I will not be working with Royal Caribbean for the purposes of Discovery Cruises. Norwegian on the other hand welcomes us with open arms! But wait, there’s more… As I had already paid for the cruise and it was too late to get anything refunded, I decided to go anyway in the hopes of maybe being able to at least informally chat with some theatre folks, as well as critique (I mean – watch… haha) a few shows, and so on. The cruise departed on Monday October 7th. I was due to leave for Florida on Sunday October 6th to go to a hotel for the night. (NEVER travel on the day of your cruise – you never know what might come up that would delay you!) On the morning of Saturday October 5th (packing day for me!) I woke up about 5am quite ill. I took myself off to urgent care. I’m fine now, but it did mean that I didn’t even have the energy to pack, let alone get on an airplane, let alone go on a cruise! So sadly I had to cancel the cruise. Yes, I had travel insurance, and got most of my expenses refunded. (NEVER go without travel insurance – you just never know what may happen!)
But, the plot thickens… I’d also been invited to co-host a session at the Florida Association of Theatre Educators (FATE) by a former PRESETT student who took my High School Theatre Operations course. (You can check it out – now in the form of online tutorials – at: https://www.presett.org/tmttutorials.html). Hence the timing of my cruise booking. I was to go to the conference the day of disembarkation (11th) and present the following morning (12th). So I had to let him know I wasn’t coming to that either. Now, you may be recognizing the week of October 7th. That Wednesday Hurricane Milton made landfall on Florida. As a consequence of that (to the Utopia, not to mention the million other -some tragic - consequences), the Utopia had to stay at sea for an extra day, until the 12th, which would have meant I would have missed the conference all together. But even if that hadn’t happened, it turned out the conference was – sadly – completely canceled anyway. So, was the universe telling me not to go on the cruise? I don’t know. But I do know that I suspect because of the circumstances that the crew would have been extra busy keeping passengers entertained all that week, and it probably would have been difficult for me to find time in their schedules to meet up anyway. So, yeah, that happened. I’m going to be land bound for the rest of the year now, and I’m in the process of booking a cruise for early next year. (But not on Royal Caribbean!) Very much looking forward to it! But in the meantime, I’m still going to be bringing you tips, tricks and news about working in theatres on cruise ships. Plus, I’m still available to answer any of your questions if you are curious about working in theatres on cruise ships, and to help you book your Discovery Cruise if you are serious about finding out what it’s like working in theatres on cruise ships. Stay tuned for the next three posts though! I have been chatting with a renown theatre safety guru who has kindly offered me – in order to provide to you - insider information into three court cases involving safety incidents in theatres on cruise ships for which she was an Expert Witness. Fascinating reading – so be sure to check in every Friday! Please Like and Comment – I’d love to hear from you! Thanks! Curious about working on a cruise ship?
