You can travel solo on any cruise line you want, however for most cruise lines you’ll end up paying what’s often called a Single Supplement. That means you’ll pay for double occupancy for your cabin. This is because if one person occupies a cabin, the cruise line misses out on the revenue of two people purchasing drinks packages, excursions, etc, and the gratuities are halved. Fair enough, I suppose, but it makes for an expensive Discovery Cruise if you want to, or need to, go alone. However, there is a good solution out there if you want to do a solo Discovery Cruise and not have to pay double. And that’s Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL). Which, conveniently, also happens to be the only cruise line which I currently – at the time of writing this blog – partner with for Discovery Cruises.
NCL has a great program for solo travelers. First, they offer solo cabins, which just fit one person. Most of them are Interior Cabins, but a few are Ocean View. They only charge for one person’s fare for these cabins. And just to point out, we’re talking about “solos” not “singles”. Most solo travelers are not looking to ‘hook up’ with anyone, they truly like traveling on their own and meeting like-minded people. Second, they have all of the solo cabins grouped together in one area, called The Studios. And what’s more the hallways where these cabins are, are sectioned off by a door, which you can only access with your key card. The Studios have their own private lounge area, which is typically stocked with some drinks and snacks. And not only that, but there are special events for solos. One of the special events is a hosted pre-dinner meet up. Typically there may be snacks and some sort of cocktail or wine available – for free! The meet up is hosted by a dedicated NCL host. And then... the host will have arranged for a table to be reserved in the main dining room just for the solo group. But wait, there’s more… the host will then escort the solo group past the lines of people waiting to get into the dining room, straight to the table. So, if you’re someone who doesn’t like to eat alone, this is definitely for you. And if you prefer to eat on your own, you certainly can go to any restaurant on the ship and ask for a table for one. Norwegian understands that solo travel is becoming more and more popular, and they really know how to treat their Solos!
