WHAT IS THE DISCOVERY CRUISE PROGRAM?
A Discovery Cruise is your opportunity to discover what it's like to work in a theatre aboard a cruise ship, before you commit to a new career. No long-term commitment. You will experience life on board a ship, and check out all of the venues, the types of entertainment, and observe the technical aspects of the shows and events. Discovery Cruises are on major cruise line ships, with large state-of-the-art theatres and a variety of other venues. Discovery Cruises are typically fairly short, 3 to 5 days. Not too long of a commitment (or expense!), but long enough to discover if this career path is for you. Teachers! You can go on a Discovery Cruise, too. You will bring back seas of information for your students! |
Attend a variety of shows and events – for free!
Investigate talking with the theatre technicians about their jobs and life aboard ship.
Look into getting a backstage tour of the entertainment venues, and a backstage tour of the living quarters.

HOW DOES IT WORK? 1. Send in the DISCOVERY CRUISE REQUEST FORM. 2. I will research the best cruise as per your requirements. |
DON’T WAIT TO BOOK YOUR DISCOVERY CRUISE! Cruise fares tend to go up closer to a cruise date, not down. Plus… You choose your cruise line when you book early. Booking early allows you a better choice of cabin. Booking early assures you get the dates and itinerary you want. Some cruise lines offer perks for early bookers. Last minute deals are best only if you aren’t worried about restrictions. |
3. Once I've booked your cruise you may be responsible for booking any flights and/or pre/post-cruise hotels.
4. Once your cruise is booked I will inform the shipboard Event Director of your Discovery Cruise status.
5. When you’re on board, check in with the Event Coordinator (they may also be called a Cruise Director or other title - you can ask how to get ahold of them at the Guest Services desk), and start exploring the ship and its theatre(s?!) and venues, to find out if this is the career you love.
6. After you return – it would be great if you would send in a report to be included in the CruiseTechies blog to help others follow in your footsteps. And any photos or videos (none with faces of people who have not given written permission).
After your Discovery Cruise, if you decide working in a theatre on a cruise ship is for you(!), I will send you contact information for many of the major cruise lines, so that you can start applying for your new life style and career!

Also... being a theatre safety guru myself (you can check out my books on theatre safety at https://www.presett.org/hstheatrebooks.html), I must point out the risk management issues regarding theatres, and that Discovery Cruise Program participants would not be permitted to handle instruments and equipment, be back stage during a performance, and must follow other industry safety precautions as set forth by the cruise line.
